With the market flooding with various credit card companies and each company having various types credit cards; it is natural for a common man to get befuddled in numerous choices. It is necessary for you to choose a Credit card wisely so that it’s you who get the maximum benefits and not become a victim of credit card Company allowing them to reap all benefits from you in the form of interest charges and different kinds of fee. There are certain things that you should consider while making choice of your credit card.

You will get different credit card offers in your mailbox, Internet, and shopping stores. But don’t get swayed away by the eye catching offers; you should really think if the card is right for you or not. You can save a lot by shopping through a credit card; but you have to use it wisely. If you choose and use a credit card carelessly, it can get you under debts which will act as a scar on your credit history. Before choosing a credit card, ask yourself some questions.

  1. Check out what kinds of credit card do you need? There are different types of credit cards like student cards, reward credit cards, regular credit cards etc. they differ in their services, choose the one that best caters your requirements.
  2. Usage of card also varies from person to person. Make a choice keeping in mind what your usage will be. Whether you will be using card for major purchases or will be using it regularly? Are you going to carry forward your balance or you will be clearing the bill every month. These are certain things you should consider.
  3. Check for the annual percentage rate of the credit card. APR is the interest rate charged on the balance amount after interest free period is over. Higher APR means higher cost of keeping balance. Those who carry forward balances should choose a low interest rate card because APR is usually high. Also APRs are different for purchases, transfers and cash advances. Your choice should be compatible with your usage.
  4. Make a thorough research on the grace period offered by different credit cards. Grace period is the time period after issuing of your bill during which no interest is charged on your balance. Grace period varies for different cards. Opt for a card with longer grace period.
  5. Credit card companies have their charges also. They obtain these charges if form of different types of fees, like annual fee, late fee, etc. they charge fee for certain services also, like additional copies of statements or returning your check and so on.
  6. You should be aware of the method the company uses to calculate the charges. Some calculate charges on current balance while others may include previous balance also.
  7. Credit limit is also an important point to be considered. You might be thinking what good or bad can credit limit do; but it does play an important role. A high credit limit means high expenses which makes you a debtor of the credit company for a large amount at the end of the month. So, choose a card with credit limit that is in accordance with your expenses, so that you can control your card’s swipes and hence the bill.
  8. Make full use of the opportunities and rewards. Credit card companies offer some rewards and facilities to their customers for using the credit card. There are certain terms and conditions for it. Get completely acquainted with it and you can avail the bonuses, rewards and other facilities by using your credit card.

So, make a wise decision when your are choosing a credit card for first time and use it carefully so that you can avail all the benefits.
